Has Bangalore lost its charm?

Tags: , ,

India’s IT uprising awarded revolutionary status to the slothful town of Bangalore some years ago. Popularly known as an ideal retirement location, it got transformed into a confluence of technology, shopping malls, good weather and some teeming pubs! IT companies, Indian and international flocked to set up shop in India’s very own Silicon Valley. But does Bangalore resemble any of this today?

Metros and smaller cities across India are virtually on their mark against Bangalore! And with the infrastructure evils, 11.30 pm deadlines, ‘no dancing’ rule, roaring traffic, power cuts, alarming crime rates, security threats at IT campuses, the city seems to be losing its luster. Add to this, the recent political chaos over coalition politics, the unruffled and silent city seems to have disappeared altogether. Does Bangalore continue to be India’s best city for business - or otherwise?

The 11.30 deadline came in as a dampener for the city’s party circuit. Many foreign IT companies are now looking beyond Bangalore. Have investments in Bangalore suffered due to political instability? Will the city’s infrastructure continue to be a bone of contention? Has Brand Bangalore lost its charm? Has Bangalore itself been Bangalored?

What do you think, Answerers?

  1. Hello guys,
We hate all these so called developments. We do not like the developments nor the great culture these people brought with them. 11.30 pub culture and other related culture is unwelcome.

Please leave us(bangaloreans) and take all the developments and enjoy it. We had a very rich and decent culture, where we all lived happily with little money.

Faster the Development- Sooner the destruction.

  2. Yes.. of late Bangalore is losing its sheen. The major credit for this goes to the politics in the state and the city. There weren’t stable govts. for almost 4 years now. The roads of the city are shattered. Infrastructure projects that were begun are left at god’s mercy.

  3. Bangalore had a charm, exactly a decade ago. It attracted multi-cultural trend towards all the endeavors. But it could not hold them for a while because of the increased population in men and machines. Nevertheless, IT infrastruture has done all the damage that the city is no longer a place for middle class people and the lower class. Timely, unplanned city exapnsion (including roads, residential areas, water supply) lead to heavy traffic of human and vehicles. There were plenty of trees and parks in Bangalore, a decade ago. Now, What do we see, is that the concrete blocks and the pollution specimened faces. There could be one solution, to atleast save the Bangalore as it is now, is that the goverment should come front to have the proper ratio of human and the space by not allowing more IT companies coming in to Bangalore any more. Let the city have some rest for the few years and let it settle down. Please let us come forward to save this ‘Garden city’ as it was.

  4. definitely not.Bengaluru is known best for its innovation and imagineering. Having a false perception that bengaluru has lost its sheen in IT sector is totally false, infact bengaluru has come up in future areas which involve imagination and different challenges and to add that IT sector is having its own problem like rupee value rising, other low cost countries attracting them etc it is infact the IT sector which is in trouble not Bengaluru. It is not long when bengaluru will be called nanocity or something else due to the kind of R&D work that is going on and also the environment and talent that is there in the city which suites the entrepreneurs and noble men.

  6. I endorse the opinion of Mr.Chandra Shekar.
Brand Bangalore means, WHAT ? Open shows, bars till mid night, reckless driving, deterioration of moral standards, night life, mad traffic, and all non bangaloreans want the best of everything of Bangalore,by killing Bangalore. Is that what you mean? Then, please forgive us. Nobody likes such brands. Let bangalore loose its charm. No botheration.

  7. The roads in bangalore are not vey wide.Added to thatdue to the influx of it professinals in huge numbers and their cars and other vehicles there atre problems like traffic zams and consequent delay in reaching to the work place.Thats why new bangalore townships are coming to avoid heavy traffic of the city.Political turmoil by unscrupulous politicians also added to the instability of the govt. and conseqwent inaction on various public grievaences. The case of bangalore is a good lesson as too many industries,it companies etc.,should not be located in one place. there should be dispersal in various good towns and other cities to prevent aforesaid problems

  10. Bangalore is facing trafic jamm..that problem this problem etc. etc. its because of rapid development due to IT companies. its good that revenue inflow in bangalore nad money flow is more due to these people. but trafic jam is due to mainly increased cars .. this car occupies space of min 4 twoo wheelers but occupant inside is only one. but this is unavoidable as the people can not depend on mass transf\port available. however the IT companies should provide this facility. IT companies shoild also have planned for accomodation and site planning ..allocation etc how the other companies like MICO, BHEL, BEML , ISRO, doing…but itts already a bygone era. their contribution should have beenmore to the socity.. ofcourse few are excuse…

  13. Even though Bangalore is a IT capital it has lost its day old charm. The contribution of IT industries is more responsible for the haphazard growth of Bangalore where there are lot of evidences.Bangalore is no more a garden city, it is a concrete forest. 15-20 years back Bangalore was so green and even the temperature hardly used to cross 30 degrees in summer. In the name of road widening many trees has been killed!! Even the government bodies like forest dept or BDA doesnot care for this. They hardly maintain these. The tradition practice of planting trees on the either side of the road is no more. We hardly see some areas having such roads. Many big lakes has been encroached resulting in drastic climate change. Many big circles like Corporation circle, Mekhri circle…… had gardens which has disappeared now!! Even the new roads like ring road hardly have trees on either side. People who call Bangalore as a garden city still are real stupids. Bangalore cannot cope up with further invesment in industrial sector, it has already been highly populated and pollution raising at alarm level. Government should no more entertain the investments in Bangalore and can redirect it to tier 2 cities like Mysore, Hubli…so that there will be well balanced growth over all. Further the shifting of population into Bangalore can be avoided at great extent.

  16. the major problem with development in Indian cities is that there is no prior planning .i think bangalore has not yet lost its charm but if things remain like this it would surely one day.A metro train coming up would lessen the problem of traffic which is a major issue.

  18. Yes,Bangalore has lost it’s beauty and charm…
It has been replaced with money,to lead a better standard of living. I have a small instance to share as to how,the place where i live was surrounded with glumohar trees, and it was awesome to see them blooming in summer as well as home for different Spiches of birds, squirrels, cats and also street dogs, but residences found these trees a nonsense only because it sheds huge amount of leafes and cleaning was a problem to them, and also sometimes when it rains branches use to touch electric ploes and short circuit and had to wait for electric board to come a repair. These were the 2 problems faced by us regularly but people forget that same trees were actually giving us fresh air and shed from sun.Today there are no trees at all on the same lane and no birds,no cats, and no dogs too.
The whole lane looks so empty, surrounded with only apartments and houses, the same place was so beautiful few years back, each home has 2 cars, bikes parked but no little space for these plants or trees. This is the sutiation in one lane just imagine Bangalore which was so famous for it’s greenary once called as a Garden city is now called as IT Capital, which is good but what about fresh air, bangalore is filled with pollution, heat is raising each year people are having water problems, beacuse hardly any groundwater left to dig a well, this way bangalore has already lost it’s charm in my opinion.

  20. Its a bit embarassing that banglore is losing its charm. But i thought bangalore was a great city.Only when i waited in the State Transport Bus in a small signal for more than 20 minutes,i came to know the real face of bangalore traffic. There is definitely a reason for the change temperature of bangalore and one reason is that the IT companies having glass walls..Just image all these glass walls reflecting the heat and thus circulating the heat withing the city. This form one of the major reason for the heavy rain and flood that bangalore suffered a few years ago.And finally the politicians.Hats off to them for blundering the city .Definitely some anti social groups in the names of saving kannada and creating violence against other state people have made bangalore a criminal city and a non secure city.A simple logic is that the political parties of Karnataka be it national or local, are keen on getting reservation for Kannadiga’s in IT sector. This is gonna be the biggest blunder . No IT company entertains reservation and if that happens many IT firms will close its operations and will head for Chennai and Hyderabad.Already Chennai is taking a wide step in the infrastructure for IT companies.Hyderabad is an established hitech city. Its Bangalore which is going to be the loser. Untill there is a stable government nobody can even move a small stone in Bangalore.Even if a government is formed these useless politicians will fight for themselves just for power and will forget Bangalore’s development

  22. yes not only bangalore all the city which has IT industry has the same problem. check with pune, gurgaon, noida, chennai, hyderabad, this 5 city has 90% of our IT company including multinational company. the problem with IT sector is that they want to rule the town by giving nothing to the town and just spending the money which is not hard earn money so this problem is with IT people and because fo them all the rates sky high but they never think that they are just 3% population and want to make other to change like that. how many of middle class people which is 60 to 70 percent of population in banglaore can live there where every thing is touching sky . kudoos to software company they bring this to banglaore .

  23. Yes Bangalore has lost all its charm in the last -10-years. The development of infrastructure is tardy without planning or forethought, envision of next 5/10 years is totally absent. Even we as ordinary citizens are not conscious of our obligation to the society and are more unconcerned with other humanbeings. If we change even slightly in our attitudes to others and show a little concern to our social obligations we can achieve success though it may be small one in the beginning but beginning would have been made.

  24. Bangalore is definitely undisputedly one of the fastest growing cities in the world. There are a few things that might suggest that Bangalore has lost its charm eg-The 11 30 deadline. It is very essential to maintain law and order and this is why it is enforced.
Also the new name `Bengaluru` whatever sounds pathetic and blemishes the world class city. This name adds a hint of a rural setting and sounds like we are refering to a village.

My verdict let Bangalore be Bangalore and not some weird name….

  25. Totally agree….Bangalore has completely lost it…the same old thinking..”Acting” conservative…double standards…illiterate driving sense…no lane systems-illogical one ways, bottle necks everywhere…
people in administration know everything but managing the city-this city has the country’s best management school and lowest level of I.Q. on management…they should learn traffic sense from mumbai atleast rather than abusing the IT crowd and saying that they made it living hell. They would never let progress happens…rather than pondering on trivialities like till when are the bars open or weather or not dancing in pubs be allowed or not they should try and see that whatever infrastucture that they have now is all thanks to the IT development..but alas the thankless people!!! Localites have made it completely unsafe city! kudos to them !
wished they didnt have so much airs about their own selves or their city which would be a wreck had things gone the way they wanted it…thank god rest of India doesn’t have such an amazing governing body!!!

  26. Bangalore the city of gardens lost its attraction and affection due to influx of too many people from different places., which has increased the cost of living in every walk of life. Always, it must be the process that authorities must develop/diversify the influx to other underdevelopment places by providing the infrastructions and incentives. There should be proper distribution of progress and prosperity
The change of living style which I mean to say PUBS,late night movementsm, clubs etc. running behind money and adopting the unsocial activities is not our culture, Due to overflow of all these Bangalore the city of garden lost its charm and beauty.
By sacrificing ones charm and beauty it is not the
way to achive goal. There are many things to define.still
    However, I will say
Our, culture is to live with love, peace and progress

Jo jis se mela seekha hum ne ghairoon ko
bhi apnaya hum ne Ziyad ki nahe lalach hame
Thodae maie hi guzara karte hain

    Jea India and blessings Bangalureans

  28. Yes, the good old Bangalore has gone to dogs.

I lived in Bangalore from 1999 to 2003 and then shifted to delhi. Now ehen I visit Bangalore, i feel very sad and very disgusted about it. SM Krishna was the one who at least did something for development. Ever since his exit, there has virtually been no government at all and the politicos like Deve Gowda and his sons have screwed up the golden city.

The destruction of Bangalore is a lesson for the entire country, especially for Pune which is going down the hll just as fast!

I am native of karnataka born and bought in mumbai … decided to invest in property in bangalore and move there permanently .. but to be honest i was petrified with the pathetic infrastructure of bangalore … forget international, bangalore is still atleast two centuries behind in infrastructure when compared to mumbai and other metros … the roads, public transport are worse then many villages in india …. the immediate need for bangalore are wide and good roads like delhi and a good public transport system like mumbai … and ofcourse a good goverment …

  36. Absolutely. Narrow mindsets, Selfish gains, Uneduated, Unemployed, Stupid people. I am not a pessimist but well all together they bought down good rulers. There are so many nice indians who love their country from deep of their heart. There are also few politicians who love India and has better understanding but they dont have respect. Respect among masses is most important they dont really give a shit about development but what we need to understand is nature laws which say stronger will survive, Weaker will perish. Such a great spirtual country with highest knowledge and values is now plagued with stupidity and poverty…. I want to cry about it but i also want to wake up and support this great nation on my back.
