The People’s Movement

With the government all set to discuss the Jan Lokpal Bill in parliament today, we sent out a message into the Yahoo! Universe, to gauge the pulse of our readers. Do they support Anna, or are they against him? Do they believe Anna’s methods are democratic? Will the Lokpal bill change corruption at all, or will we just be creating another monster in the public sphere?

Reflecting the strength of the movement on the ground, our readers share their opinions, sharp and insightful, as they engage in conversation with the community.

While the majority seem to support Anna’s cause, seeing him as a “one man institution against corruption” taking a stance against the government’s view that people in power are above the law, there are a few dissenting voices. Confused about how a group with a genuine cause can resort to black-mailing the government, there is an opinion that Team Anna detracts from the cause, with the means they have employed to reach their end – dictating terms to an elected house.

Will the bill bring any sort of change? Verdict remains divided. While it appears that the cancer of Indian corruption is beyond rescue, there remains a sliver of hope; it is a step in the right direction. Recalling the skepticism that the RTI faced not so long ago, it is without question a tool that has blown the lid off several scams. Another reader rightly points out that India has no deficit of laws to control corruption, it has just shown abysmal effort at implementing them. Therefore the creation of another law will merely be superfluous, adding to the corrupt workforce, and to the list of laws that are a travesty of justice. Instead, if some of this focus was diverted into correcting our judiciary methods – expediting legal processes, cutting down red-tape, and increasing accountability to higher courts, we would have a far more efficient, effective system on our hands; one that the people would be less dissatisfied with. Reader Meenakshi agrees that it is indeed the Judiciary that has failed us, but believes that the Lokpal bill will never be implemented, as it amounts to signing a political death warrant.

There seems to be lack of consensus regarding whether Anna stands for democracy or not. Mukesch Kaley is of the opinion that Anna’s methods make it quite clear that he is against democracy. However there is a segment of our audience that believe he is in fact, the only man out there fighting for the survival of real democracy; a government for the people, by the people and of the people, not a farcical shadow of the idea, that allows the corrupt to stay in power, to evade justice, and take the country for a ride.

While it may be that the Lokpal is not nearly enough to root out corruption, it has certainly come at a time where it has found an audience, nay, an uprising, that demands to be heard. And while the bill goes to parliament, a country watches, unblinking.

  4. If such a stringent bill is passed this will mean that Politics will not remain as a profession for many sitting MPs as well aspirants. If there is no output then why will anyone spend so much of black money i.e., beyond permissible limits prescribed by the Election Commission.
In fact, all the parties (internally) are against setting up any watchdog above them who can prescribe a death warrant for their lucrative career. Same is with Judiciary because now they have the mace power of contempt of court if anyone talks against them.
All the honest, patriots and sane persons are in favour of a strict Lokpal Bill which will be a ray of hope for minimising,if not eradicating corruption from our system. Many countries have done so in the past but there seems no will in this country by the law makers.
Always same tune is being harped; i.e., supremacy of parliament but one may ask a question that how many criminals have been inducted in Lok Sabha so far besides posing another question that out of this number how many have been punished by law.
Our constitution is supreme but the most supreme as per this constitution is “We the people”. Even if someone has been elected for 5 years by the public but no one has given them a licence to ruin the nation for 5 years and then take the shelter of another election. Everyone, whether bureaucrat, MP/MLA or Judicial officer, is bound by the oath of allegiance to the Constitution and nowhere this constitution provides protection to a corrupt person. Therefore, we may ask that why there is a hue and cry to stop this rampant corruption? In my opinion, every section of society should have given whole hearted support for framing such a law that creates a fear in the spine before accepting/demanding bribe.
But in the present circumstances, we do not want to lose Anna. He has shown us a ray of hope in complete darkness. Let him break fast and carry on Dharna and go all out against corruption and supporters of corruption. All the channels and people are with you Anna and your dedicated team
    Kudos to them

If there was no corruption in this congress govt.. howcome some PM & Ministers n officials n ranging from rao to kalmadi are in side tihar jail?

in abv circumtances.. who can ask the govt to make a preventive law against corrution?

    general public…

Anna is just a public but with a difference he is supported by majority of public….

If an Indian referendum is voted to choose next PM between Mr Lameduck and ANNA… perhaps my choice will be Anna like others..

  7. irrespective of any thing, it is the duty of the ruler to accede to his subjects” demand. in sanscrit we have a maxim “jana vakyam kartvyam”.

sita was left by rama just ’cause of an utterance by his subject that has no social staus. no protest and no agitation.

in contrast, we have rulers that say untill convicted, they are the saints and that conviction will certainly not take place under the present legal system during the rermainig part of their lives!.

it is therefore, imperative that we need an effective system in place that atleast make the corrupt believe that it is not the remaining part of their lives but just it could be a few months!. this itself would serve a great purpose even if the law is not invoked!.

Anna’s demands are very much legitimate, democratic and as guided by indian ethos, culture and scrptures.

there is nothing like undermaining or bypassing democracy or constitution. why talk of a democracy and parliament at the first place that is not only ineffective to deal with just one issue of corruption and a parliament that says corruption cann’t be eliminated!. the very people who are sitting there are not upholding it!. how these scams originated from there?. is Anna Hazare, the guardian of democracy and parliament?. democracy and parliament are already undermined!. what further damage Anna Hazare or his Bill could inflict on it any more?.

terrorism cann’t be eliminated. corruption cann’t be eliminated. stupid, why you have to utter and certify?.
why do you say this or that law would not be effectve? if you know what is effective, why did you sleep over it for years. Even now, why you are not telling us what is good and effective?. is that you know only what is bad? and that too when some one makes a statement?

why the elite and the enlightened are waking up now to deliberate and tell us the evil of Anna’s Bill?

why our Prime Minister has to say that he is a person of utmost integrity. integrity and honesty are the some requirement for one to be a Prime Minister. as much he believes that a strict Lokpal bill alone will not eliminate corruption, honesty and integrity alone do not make an edffective Ruler!. rama left his wife and here we have some one that need a permission to remove a minister!. cumpulsion of coalation politics?

traffic police recover penality instantly from even a school going and non earning student!. we have these scam people in jails for months now and not even Rs100/- is recovered!. why not a refundable peneality?.

we all know that law get’s it’s life only when it is invoked and a recourse is taken to.

Anna’s Bill demands that the Govt. provide security to both the complainant and the Lokpal!.

how then, the Govt. is bypassed?.

there should be debate before passing the bill as
there are certain points to be dicussed for the safe-
gaurd of the democracy . The unlimited powers to
the lokpal may give rise to the corruption.

  12. Anna has done a commendable service to the people of india by focussing on a burning issue like corruption. His cause needs full support of all the people. Yet his means are questionable, he simply can not undermine our democratic institutions built by the largely uneducated and poor people. They have shown time and again their power to throw corrupt, arrogant or intollerant establishment out of power. It is not the intellegenstia who threw them to dustbin of history. It is the humble poor masses of india who threw them out. Now for Anna to say parliament is nothing and should be subservient to him is not acceptable. The arguments of some of his followers that MP s are elected by a mere 20% vote is rubbish… nobody prevents people from voting. Infact it is our only proudest possession and Anna’s followers are trying to rob the poor of their rights. they should come out for more reforms in the electoral systems, rather than undermine peoples reps. yes there are despicable elements who sneaked into Assemblies and our Parliament.. Anna should join hands with the Parliament to throw them out and punish the guilty instead of adopting a confrontationist stand offs. He should get out of the clutches of his megalomanic followers and help restore peoples faith in our systems by improving it. It is Godsent opportunity for him and people would remember him for ever if he succeds in it. The country needs him. He should move only in the right direction which is to be inclusive. His exclusiveness will defeat the noble goal he has set for the country. hope he will realise this soon and take all people along and reduce corruption to a great extent.

  16. One after the other , all Governments have been accepting the established style of governance . That corruption is an integral part of it. Public suffered in silence . Now that Anna has dared to show the way , it certainly is not against democracy . It is merely telling the people in power that they ought to change their thinking and themselves ( many of them) . Public support has only strengthened this philosophy.
I am particularly concerned about the image of Indian Government , in the international circle. It has deteriorated with all this , but then the thinking and able minds in the Govt. should have anticipated all this. Anyway, it certainly is a small issue as compared to public’s vision of a better India , in not so far future. Let us remain optimistic . God bless all those who have been and will continue to be a part of this movement.

If any one thinks that even 1% corruption will be reduced due to this that person is living in some other world.

  21. It is clear to every Indian that rampant rot has set into (1) election campaigning, (2) motivation for voting (3) moral standards of the elected representatives (4) our judicial system (in bringing the corrupt to the book). The audacity of the corrupt politicians in high positions is an index of the extent of this rot. It is evident to one and all that the unscrupulous elements in our society and politics are making a mockery of the sacred institution of Democracy. .

Look at the toppers in the list of Indians who hold big accounts in Swiss banks. As per Wikileaks – a good number of our politicians including Sri Sri Sri Rajiv Gandhi, the Ex-PM + Sri Sri Sri Laalu Prasad Yadav etc are right up there. If Wikileaks is giving out wrong info, let the listed persons or Indian Govt go after Wikileaks for maligning these honest Indian politicians. If the info is true, let the listed account holders or their beneficiaries exhibit some courage and patriotism to admit their faults – hand-over the money to India and set an example to the nation.

Is there any hope for such nobility to manifest in the corrupt Indian polity ?

In the absence of any such development , Lokpal is worth giving a try. If Lokpal also turns out to be another corrupt platform, we will not be worse-off than now. If it works, India will be benefited.

  23. The people who claim that Anna Hazare is blackmailing the Government must be even of the opinion that Father Of Our Nation, Mahatma Gandhi blackmailed the British Govt to quit India, and attained India’s freedom.

Here is a man who has initiated the fight against corruption, and every Indian should stand by him. Please don’t tell me that the Gyanees who think that he is blackmailing think that we should just suffer in silence when the country is being looted right before your eyes.If this Bill can stop corruption even 10% I think it’s worth the trouble.Something is always better than nothing.

I’m an Indian and I’m proud of Anna Hazare’s efforts. God Bless Him!

  24. Anna Hazarejes movement is natural necessity in the present day situation in India. Unbridled corruption has been rampant over the post independent India for the last five decades and our Politicians irrespective of their Party affiliation ,under one pretext of other, has been promoting corruption for various reasons. Anna has done what no other force in the country could do or could have done.

  25. 3 Cheers to Annaji for his taking the pain to lead such an unprecedented movement & fasting for more than 288 hours for the Nation. I bow my head to him. I convey my regrads all the youths, general public ,the media, the celebrities & also the Parliamentarian who came forward whole-heartedly in support of this good cause .I also thank to all the Sayamsevaks of the RSS who took part in this movement under the banner of Annaji.

But it’s a shame on the part of Swami Agnivesh, who always wants to be in news cum publicity. It’s good fo all of us that his double face finally came out. It’s a shame on the part of Ministers namely P.Chidambaram,Kapil Sibbal in particular who played all out dirty game this time & also at the time movement stated by Ramdev Baba to root out corruptions. 26. Anna’s fast is NOT a blackmail. It was desperate last resort after all democratic methods have failed for 42 years. Fasting is justified only if a moral principle is involved. In some countries we see the people revolting with arms against their corrupt dictators. Are they in the right or wrong? We are revolting against a corrupt government and an insensitive parliament. What kind of MPs do we have in our Parliament? How do they get themselves elected? We have only the choice of party, not choice of the candidate. Are they genuine representatives of people? If we are to stick to democratic principles it may be another 42 years or more never because the rulers do not care for principles, rules (they bend them), ethics or even decency. Are democratic principles and constitution only for the people and not for the rulers? We succeeded in chastening the govt in a perfectly non-violent and disciplined way without loss of even one life. If Anna did not act there would be violent revolt through out the country resulting in huge loss of lives. The whole country was behind the fast having been fed up with rampant corruption. The people lost confidence in their parliament and resorted to direct action. People are supreme. Parliament is just a representative of the people. Even if it is blackmail it is much, much better than a violent revolt. But it is not blackmail. It is desperate but non-violent effort to chasten the corrupt rulers. And corruption of what magnitude! How much is there in foreign banks? Is there any other viable way of checking all this?

Any way we should be satisfied that atleast from now on the elected representative will do their mischief with utmost caution.

  28. in the current scenario there was no other solution/method to pressurize govt. yes i say to pressurize because the majority of our parliamentarians are corrupt and are scared to be punished if the bill is passed, this job was not easy, the govt tried its level best to bulldoze this, and still the corrupt politicians are against this bill and they will try their best to bulldoze this.they have already started to catch the innocent nationalist anna team leaders, they have been compelled to favor this in parliament because of very large number of supporters who were directly supporting anna’s cause. now we have to be careful till bill is passed and the lokapals are appointed which may take some time. we must thank this second ghandhi due to which so many other chapters of corruption have started opening and about the actual activities of so called honest politicians. people have come to know about such most corrupt people which includes the top brass of ministry. we have to go a very long way to improve our system,
